One of the hardest things to find in this world is a skilled, fair, reliable auto mechanic. I’m not just talking about someone who can give your 2008 sedan a tune-up. Anyone with the proper training and half a brain can operate the technology necessary to analyze today’s latest engines, because those systems have been specifically designed to make that possible. But how many mechanics today can time a 1970 V8 by ear? It’s a simple task, but also an art, and most auto shops don’t employ anyone with the simple machine experience to perform even this basic task on an older cars. If someone can’t demonstrate basic skills with a standard American V8 from the 70’s, I certainly don’t want them touching anything more complicated.
So let’s say you find a mechanic who really understands basic American cars. Do they understand the details of foreign vehicles? Do they understand the latest technology? Are they fair about cost? Honest about their abilities? Reliable enough that you would bring them any car you own, and recommend them to your closest friends and family?
I am entirely certain that if you search the U.S. for a mechanic who meets all these criteria, you will come up with less than ten auto shops, and one of them will be Gibson Auto and Electric.
I have owned over a dozen cars from three different countries, with model years ranging from 1963 to 2006, running on gasoline, propane and diesel, and there is no mechanic I trust more than Don Gibson and his team at Gibson Auto. I have never, ever had a problem with their work, their prices or their professionalism. Can you say that about your mechanic?
In short, Rob likes Gibson Auto. If your car needs any sort of work at all, and there is any chance of getting it to southeast Portland, Oregon, you need to call Don. When you talk to him, you might ask about the professional race cars he’s worked on, or ask about all the work I’ve trusted him to do on my father’s 1969 Mercedes roadster. Treat him well, trust him, and — most importantly — take every bit of advice he gives you.
